![]() As a result, nonwhite membership in White Greek-Letter Organizations (WGLOs) is often hailed as a transformative step toward equality and unity. The following chapter presents a history of the American college Greek system controversies and criticisms of Greek life the positive attributes and contributions Greeks make to campus life and society and finally, how to succeed in joining the fraternity or sorority of your choice.Īlthough law prohibits race-based exclusion in college sororities and fraternities in the United States, racial segregation prevails. These range from the centuries-old traditionally White associations, historically Black Greek-lettered organizations (BGLOs), Latino-oriented fraternities and sororities, and the newer cultural interest groups that were founded in the past half century. A diverse array of college fraternities and sororities exists that should appeal to any demographic, culture, or interest. As a freshman, from the moment you step on campus, you cannot help but notice the ubiquitous Greek letters in a spectrum of bright colors. Fran Becque, a fraternity history scholar states, “Nationally, fraternity or sorority members are the largest and most visible value-based student organizations”. Without the often paradoxically destructive and constructive power of rituals and initiation processes, BGLOs and LGLOs would not be as successful in empowering students in professional achievement, which would negate their purpose by hindering the raising of the overall professional and social attainment of their respective cultural cohorts.Īrguably, fraternities and sororities are the most noticeable symbols of college social life. The paper then examines the use of symbols and rituals for both groups in an effort to demonstrate the power that BGLOs and LGLOs have over the creation and maintenance of societies and communities. The essay begins by exploring the historical context for the development and expansion of BGLOs and LGLOs, followed by the presentation of each respective community’s academic challenges to societal success. This essay examines the societal influence of the North American non-traditional Greek Letter Organizations, and more specifically the societal construction and control exercised by Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs) and Latino Greek Letter Organizations (LGLOs) upon their communities.
